Crafting
Cuts gems, tans and stitches hides, spins string and wool, and builds jewellery, wands, staves and fishing tools from 80 configured recipes.
Crafting turns raw material into gear nobody sells: leather and dragonhide armour for ranged, gold and gem jewellery that magic enchants into glories, rings of wealth and skills necklaces, silver symbols for prayer, and your own fishing net, rods, harpoon and lobster cage. Level 50 opens the Crafting Guild and the backpack quest, and 55 fuses a slayer helmet. It is the supply skill the rest of your account leans on.
Level 1 to 120
Most of it happens at a crafting table, so the grind is a supply problem more than a clicking one. Cowhide carries you from the teens to the forties, snakeskin covers the fifties, and dragonhide takes it from 57 to 120 one colour at a time. Gems and jewellery run alongside as the profitable route, and because cutting a gem with a chisel is instant, any stockpile of uncut gems is levels waiting to be claimed.
- Spinning and silver symbols 1 to 7
From Flax to String lets you spin flax into string for 8 XP a click, the fastest thing available at level 1, and Sheep Shearer opens the wool line at 8 XP a ball of wool. If you would rather not farm flax, buy a holy mould from the crafting shop and use it on a furnace with silver bars for 20 XP an unstrung symbol, then add a ball of wool for another 12.
- Leather and hard leather 7 to 19
Kill cows and hand the hides to a tanner: a coin for leather, two for hard leather. Hard leather is always the better piece, one level later: boots at 8 for 19 XP, coif at 10 for 44, body at 15 for 110. Cows graze near Lumbridge, by the Champions' Guild and right beside the Crafting Guild.
- Hard leather chaps 19 to 45
Three hard leather a set for 88 XP, and the best XP for your time all the way to the forties. It is a long band, so break it up with gem cutting or jewellery whenever your cowhide runs dry.
- Snakeskin 45 to 57
Snakes on Karamja drop the hides and the tanner cures them for 15 coins each. Boots at 45 for 70 XP, bandana at 47 for 145, body at 49 for 300, and chaps at 51 for 232, which are the best of the four for the time they take.
- Dragonhide 57 to 120
Green at 57, blue at 66, red at 73, black at 79, each tanned for 20 coins a hide. Chaps are the best rate for the time spent from blue upward, with the green coif at 59 matching green chaps. Bodies are the biggest single hit: a black dragonhide body is 810 XP for four hides.
- Gem cutting and jewellery 20 to 120
A chisel on an uncut gem is instant XP with no timer at all: 40 for a sapphire at 20, 50 emerald at 27, 60 ruby at 34, 80 diamond at 43, 105 dragonstone at 55, 150 onyx at 67. Gold bars make plain rings, necklaces and amulets, and setting a cut gem into one is the only way to make an enchantable piece.
What it feeds elsewhere
Every enchanted piece of jewellery starts here. Sapphire pieces from 20 become rings of recoil, games necklaces and magic amulets; emerald from 27 becomes rings of dueling, the runecrafting necklace and defence amulets; ruby from 34 becomes rings of forging, gems necklaces and strength amulets; diamond from 43, dragonstone from 55 for rings of wealth, skills necklaces and glories, onyx from 67. Crafting makes the blank, magic does the enchanting.
You also make your own gathering kit: fishing net at 1, bait rod at 15, fly rod at 25, harpoon at 35 and lobster cage at 45, plus shears at 30, a hoe at 60, elemental staves at 5 and wands up to 90.
Milestones
Level 50 opens the Crafting Guild door and, alongside 50 slayer, the Crafting a Backpack quest, which is worth doing for the extra inventory space alone. Level 55 lets you fuse a black mask, ear muffs, face mask, nose peg and spiny helmet into a slayer helmet at a crafting table for 1,500 XP in one click.
Worth knowing
- Quests are worth thousands of early levels: Nature Spirit pays 3,000 crafting XP, the Fremennik Trials 2,812, Murder Mystery 1,406, Animal Magnetism and Crafting a Backpack 1,000 each, Dwarf Cannon 750.
- A gem bag holds 54 uncut gems and swallows them as you mine. Gems turn up rarely from ore rocks, and a gems necklace makes them turn up more often.
- Tanning costs coins, not levels, and gives no crafting XP, so tan in bulk. The one exception is yak hide, which needs 20 crafting and pays 5 XP a hide from Thakkrad Sigmundson.
- The crafting cape teleport drops you at the Crafting Guild, with a tanner and a field of cows a few steps away.
